About Fun on the Fields

Family Playdays was formed in June 2005 by Mel Walker with the idea of creating a safe environment for village children over the school holidays. The underused but stunning Woolacombe meadow with its sports pavilion was the perfect setting. The support of Mortehoe Parish Council ensured that it would become the Playdays Base, taking on the homely address of 'The Hut on the Meadow' and sharing the football club's facilities.

The scheme quickly proved to be popular and various activities and themed days encouraged a steady rise in membership. The fact that our activities are aimed at the whole family, with parental inclusion, makes for a great community spirit.

Of course, this is a voluntary organisation and so with the number of members ever increasing, funds were needed to enable us to buy equipment and continue to provide activity days.

The formation of a committee in early 2006 meant that fund raising ideas could be put into practise.

And so Fun on the Fields was born!

As we have since found to be typical of our committee, this was to be no ordinary village fete! The enthusiasm and energy of the committee ensured that Fun on the Fields took on a festival atmosphere, with over 1000 people attending. The weather was perfect, the music fab and the games and food all hugely popular.

Monies were raised which enabled Playdays to subsidise camping trips for local children and to purchase play equipment, making for a thoroughly enjoyable summer.

Such was the response, we were asked to put on the first Woolacombe Bonfire Night for over 6 years.

We obviously agreed, but also managed to squeeze in a fantastic Halloween party; Fright on the Field, that attracted three times as many children (and their parents!) as we'd hoped! We attracted media attention for both these events, all of it very positive!

A particular high point was our fantastic pumpkins, check out the photos, a big thank you must go to Louise Riley.

Fireworks on the Field was phenomenal. Only five days after Halloween, yet we pulled off a hugely successful event. Over 2000 people attended! The fantastic local band 'Parcel of Rogues' proved a great accompaniment to the evening and food and drink sold out completely. Yep, looks like we'll be organising the second annual Fireworks on the Fields next year!

And so, as you can see the Woolacombe Playdays Committee show no signs of slowing down any time soon, with many events and activities in the pipeline, watch this space!
